Code Alerts

Enhancing Code Alerts

The Challenge

A large metropolitan hospital is dissatisfied with their outdated code alert paging system. Patients, and their families, are bothered by the constant noise from the overhead speakers. Doctors and nurses feel they waste too much time figuring out code alerts they missed hearing because they were caring for patients or speaking with other staff members. The hospital wants a system that is more efficient, and quieter.

Benefits of Solving

Patients will enjoy a more peaceful environment, allowing for more sleep and faster recovery:

  • Stress levels for families will decrease as they will no longer be aware of emergency situations occurring around them
  • Staff members will be able to identify a code alert without having to stop and listen, thus improving patient care and productivity
  • Missed code alerts can be easily retrieved, resulting in faster response times to emergency situation

Solution

Hospital personnel receive visual, color-relevant alerts (along with audible alerts) associated with specific code alerts within the medical facility:

  • 911 Alert is used to associate audio and visual alerts when a specific icon is depressed or a specific key sequence is entered from an IP phone
  • Color Alert is used to change the color of the IP phone screen to a pre-designated color associated with a specific alert
  • The Alert Dashboard is used to allow hospital personnel to view current and past code alerts
  • This is useful when an alert was generated but not heard the first time, as well as for audit purposes
  • The Alert Dashboard also allows personnel to view camera images from designated areas if IP Camera is enabled
  • In a code situation, an color icon associated with the code can be depressed, which then changes the color of the screen of IP Phone displays to the relevant color, along with a specific tone to catch the attention of personnel
