Reducing Nurse Turnover Through Better Staff Management

The Challenge

A large metropolitan hospital is experiencing an increased turnover of ICU nurses due to long hours and first-year burnout. Nurses scheduled for 12 hour shifts are often working 4-5 additional hours to fill gaps left by sick nurses missing work. Often the ICU is so busy that there is no time for someone to make calls and locate replacements before the next shift begins, forcing the current staff to stay on duty way past their shift ends. The hospital needs a way to fill these gaps without the placing the burden of this challenge on the nurses.

The medical facility can launch automated dial-out campaigns to bring in necessary staff resources when nurses call in prior to the start of their shift to notify the shift manager they will not be coming into work.

  • Dial-Out is used to launch automated outbound calls using hospital trunk resources, with the target community being nurses who will be asked to work an upcoming shift for which they are not scheduled
  • The IPsession Add-ons database integration is used to link the Dial-Out target list with nurse names and phone numbers contained within the hospital's staff management database
  • Rules can be applied based upon hours worked, or other pertinent information
  • When a nurse calls in indicating they will not be in for their shift, the shift / nurse administrator simply depresses an icon for shift management
  • They can enter the date and shift desired
  • The application then determines which nurses can work that shift based upon desired rules, and begins calling those nurses
  • When a called nurse indicates they can take the shift (for example, by depressing "1" to acknowledge), the application terminates the out calling, and can notify / alert the administrator that the shift has been filled
